Golden Hornet is a non-profit based in Austin, Texas, focused on the commissioning of new music.

Golden Hornet Project, Inc. (now known as Golden Hornet) is an Austin, Texas based 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1999 by composer-bandleaders Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopchinski. Golden Hornet has premiered over 100 works by more than 90 composers rooted in wildly different musical backgrounds, with a special focus on composers who also play in bands. In 1999 this independent classical movement barely existed. Now it’s thriving in cities around the world. 

Recent Projects

String quartet smackdown album release

String Quartet Smackdown is a bracketed NCAA basketball tournament style competition using original compositions submitted by composers and musicians worldwide. It’s like March Madness for the ears! This album is comprised of the final sixteen quartets of the second annual concert, held in January 2015.

Student composers from various Austin-area Middle and High Schools are given several months to collaborate with a local professional ensemble, composer original music, and produce a concert.

SXSW ATX Composers showcase

Golden Hornet and KMFA, Classical 89.5 present an annual alt-classical SXSW showcase focused on sharing new contemporary music and local ensembles based in Austin, Texas. 

Ensembles featured were Tetractys, Fast Forward Austin, Invoke, Graham Reynolds, Mother Falcon, and The Kraken Quartet.
